?It?s not the hours that make a difference,? said Neil Lundberg, one of the researchers and a recreation management professor at Brigham Young, in a statement. ?It?s really what it does to the relationship ? whether or not it creates conflict and quarreling over the game.?
For the study, published in the Journal of Leisure Research, researchers surveyed 349 married gamers: in 132 couples, only one person gamed ? 84% of the time it was the husband. In the other 217 couples, both partners gamed, but in cases where one person played more than the other, it was again the husband 73% of the time.
On average, the study respondents were 33 years old and had been married seven years. (Previous research has found that more than a third of players of multiplayer online role-playing games are married; 22% have kids ? how they have the time to game is beyond us.)
Overall, researchers found that 75% of gamers? spouses wished they would put more effort into their marriage, and when one person spent a lot more time gaming than the other, it usually led to dissatisfaction and arguing. Like any other activity that gets in the way of couples? intimacy and family time, gaming had the same effect.
Researchers were surprised to discover, however, that for couples in which both partners played, 76% reported that gaming was actually good for their marriage. Interacting with one another?s avatars online led to higher marital satisfaction in real life, the study found ? as long as both people were happy with their mutual participation. Interestingly, couples who gamed on the same team were less likely to report being satisfied than those who played on separate teams ? possibly in part because more advanced gamers got frustrated when their less skillful spouses couldn?t keep up.
?We didn?t realize that there was a whole group of couples who game together,? said Lundberg. ?In those gaming couples where the marital satisfaction was low, the same issues existed. For example, if they argued about gaming and bedtime rituals were interrupted, even though they gamed together, they still had lower marital satisfaction scores.?
The researchers also suggest that gamers? marital dissatisfaction could potentially be a bigger problem than the study found, since many gamers declined to participate in the study.
?This study really does verify that gaming has an effect on marital satisfaction,? Lundberg said. ?It?s not just a random occurrence that a few couples are dealing with.?

For those who weren't aware, the hit comic turned mega hit basic cable program, "The Walking Dead," is getting the video game treatment. Given how zombies are a staple of interactive entertainment, it's easy to imagine something along the lines of "Resident Evil," "Dead Rising," or "Dead Island." But this latest game to prominently feature the undead is a break from the norm.
Not much has been said about the game since its unveiling at last year's San Diego Comic Con, which is why its makers, Telltale Games, have produced the following behind the scenes video, which includes conversations with the people involved in its creation:
For those who don't have time to watch the 13-minute plus clip: things kick off with a sit-down with Jake Rodkin and Sean Vanaman, the two lead designers. They explain how the game is closer to the comic, which they view as "canon," though fans of the AMC show will be able to follow along.
Players will assume the role of a new character, Lee Everett, who is a criminal on his way to jail, but finds freedom thanks to the zombie apocalypse. Along the way, Everett becomes acquainted with a little girl named Clementine, who has been orphaned due to the outbreak. As a non-playable, secondary character, she is intended to be a "lens that you can see your choices [within the game] though, and the story in general" explains Vanaman.
The two form a family of sorts, a theme heavily?reinforced in the source material. Series creator, Robert Kirkman, and his involvement in the project was also discussed. When Telltale Games pitched their ideas, Kirkman was happy to hear his original narrative was not being regurgitated, even though certain characters are reused.
The game, or the first episode at least, takes place immediately after the outbreak, while the lead from the comic and the show is still in a coma (both follow Rick after he wakes up, and tries to cope with a world that has changed). Kirkman was also happy with Telltale Games' emphasis on the story. As Vanaman states, "It's not a headshot game" ??referring to the fact that it's not the usual zombie kill-a-thon.
The middle of the video, which contains massive spoilers from the comics, is actually the best part. It shows various members of the developmental team explaining their favorite parts from assorted issues, and in the process shows they completely understand and respect the source material, which is not often the case with many comic/movie/tv show adaptations.
The final segment deals with how the game will play, and that's where things become vague. There has been little word on what gameplay will be like, and that hasn't changed. Telltale Games is mostly known for producing adventure games. Two of their most well known creations are also based on pop culture staples: "Back To The Future" and "Jurassic Park."
The former played like a traditional installment of the genre, in which the emphasis is on exploration, talking with other characters, and solving puzzles. The latter mixes it up by having action oriented segments controlled via Quick Time Events. Response to "Back To The Future" has been mixed at best, whereas?"Jurassic Park" has been universally panned by critics and players alike.
And just like those two games, the "Walking Dead" game will be episodic and distributed digitally. No release date has been given.

University President Susan Herbst said she's disappointed by the decision of NCAA staff to reject that proposal, but said the school will appeal.
"I want to be clear that during my entire career as a scholar and a teacher, I have been in full support of high academic standards in collegiate athletics," she said. "However, in this case, there are good students who could be penalized for the problematic behavior of students who have not been enrolled for years. Educators and parents need to do what is right for their students, and not allow them to be caught in the dynamics of public relations."
Under rules approved in October, a school must have a two-year average score of 930 or a four-year average of 900 on the NCAA's annual Academic Progress Rate, which measures the academic performance of student athletes.
Connecticut's men's basketball scored 826 for the 2009-10 school year. UConn's score for the 2010-11 school year is expected to be about 975.
That would not be high enough. It would give Connecticut a two-year score of 900.5 and a four-year average of 888.5.
In its waiver request, obtained this week by The Associated Press under a Freedom of Information request, UConn proposes it be allowed to play in the tournament if it agrees to forfeit the tournament revenue, reduce the number of regular-season games played in the 2012-13 season from 27 to 23 and bar Calhoun from meeting off-campus with prospective recruits during the fall 2012 contact period.
The schedule changes also would include eliminating exhibition games next season, but would not impact the team's play at the in-season Paradise Jam tournament in the Virgin Islands. So the actual number of games played would be 26 rather than 30. The school said all hours that would have been spent in competition will instead transfer to study hall, tutor sessions or meetings with advisers.
The school said Calhoun will bring a current or former NBA player to inner-city schools for at least five educational sessions on the importance of academic achievement.
The waiver request outlines the school's Academic Improvement Plan ? new programs and penalties the school has in place to improve the team's academic standing.
That includes mandated sanctions for any player who misses three or more classes during the academic year and daily checks of course work for student-athletes who have a grade-point average of 2.3 or lower.
The defending national champions would be academically ineligible in 2013, because the NCAA plans to use data from the 2009-10 and 2010-11 academic years.
Walter Harrison, the chairman of the NCAA's Committee on Academic Performance has said that the body will be meeting on Feb. 20 to discuss whether to adjust reporting dates to allow schools to use their most recent data in qualifying for tournaments. For the 2013 men's basketball tournament, that would mean scores from the 2010-11 and 2011-12 academic year.
UConn would qualify for the tournament under that scenario.
It notes in the waiver request that the team attained perfect APR eligibility and retention scores for the Fall 2011 semester. The school also noted that it has just one player on the team left from the group that scored low enough to warrant sanctions.
"We continue to believe that we have made a very compelling case in our waiver to the NCAA and we are pleased with the recent outstanding academic success of our men's basketball student-athletes," Herbst said.
The school's appeal now goes before a subcommittee of the Committee on Academic Performance and could be further appealed to Harrison.
