On the sun: Massive solar flare unleashed (+video)

An X-class flare erupted on the sun on Monday, according to scientists. These flares, sometimes interfering with radio signals here on Earth, are likely to continue as the sun approaches the peak of its magnetic activity in 2013.?

By Staff,?Space.com / October 23, 2012

NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory satellite captured this photo of the X-class solar flare unleashed from the sun Monday.

The sun unleashed a powerful solar flare late Monday (Oct. 22), releasing waves of radiation into space that have already caused a short radio blackout on Earth.

The flare came from an active region on the left side of the sun that has been numbered AR 1598, which has already been the source of a number of weaker flares. This flare was classified as an X.1-class flare.

The?flare erupted from the sunspot AR 11598?(short for Active Region 11598), and reached peak brightness at 11:22 p.m. EDT (0322 GMT this morning, Oct. 23), according to scientists working on NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), a space telescope that constantly monitors the sun with high-definition cameras. It ranked as an X1.8?solar flare, one of the strongest types of solar flares, according to the U.S. Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) run by NOAA and the National Weather Service.

The same sunspot produced three strong flares before this one in just the two days since it became visible from Earth's perspective. "This means more flares are probably in the offing, and they will become increasingly Earth-directed as the sunspot turns toward our planet in the days ahead," astronomer Tony Phillips wrote on?Spaceweather.com, a website that tracks skywatching and space weather events.?

Solar flares are caused when magnetic activity ramps up in certain patches, called sunspots, on the surface of our star. Scientists measure the strength of solar flares in terms of energy classes, with X-class flares the most powerful sun storms. Moderate flares rank as class M storms and can supercharge Earth's northern lights displays when aimed at our planet. Class C solar flares are the weakest of the bunch and have little effect on Earth. [Photos: Sunspots on Earth's Closest Star]

Monday's solar flare was captured in photos and video by SDO, and appears as a bright white flash coming off the sun. The flare was a short-lived type of solar eruption called an impulsive flare (as opposed to the other type, called a gradual flare).

"Impulsive flares aren't generally associated with severe space weather, and additionally, this region is still several days away from directly facing Earth from center disk," SWPC officials wrote. "Nonetheless, the potential for continued activity remains, so stay tuned for updates as Region 1598 makes its way across the visible disk."

Solar flares often release bubbles of charged plasma (called coronal mass ejections) into space that, when they impact Earth, can cause geomagnetic storms that disrupt radio communications and power grids and create especially beautiful displays of the?northern and southern lights?(auroras). This flare, however, did not unleash a coronal mass ejection, so it is predicted to cause little disruption on Earth and no special auroras. Its powerful radiation was enough, though, to briefly disrupt radios here last night.

The sun?is getting more and more active lately as it approaches an expected peak of magnetic activity in 2013. This activity naturally waxes and wanes on an 11-year weather pattern. The sun's current cycle is called Solar Cycle 24.

Highlights and media registration San Diego, California, Nov. 18-20, 2012

The 65th Annual Meeting of the American Physical Society's (APS) Division of Fluid Dynamics (DFD) will include more than 2,000 compelling presentations from across the physical sciences, engineering, and medicine.

The meeting will take place Nov. 18 - 20, 2012, at the San Diego Convention Center near the historic Gaslamp Quarter of San Diego, Calif. Reporters are invited to attend the conference free of charge. Registration instructions and other information may be found at the end of this news release.

Preliminary Meeting Highlights

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 18

The Silent Flight of the Owl: Many species of owl rely on specialized plumage to reduce their noise levels and enable hunting in acoustic stealth. One particular feather arrangement is believed to mitigate the type of air turbulence that is the predominant source of noise. http://meeting.aps.org/Meeting/DFD12/Event/177007

Acoustic Lens to Boost Power: Acoustic waves are routinely used in ultrasonic imaging or hyperthermia surgery. To give these waves a boost, researchers have constructed an acoustic lens that focuses the waves' energy into so-called "sound bullets." http://meeting.aps.org/Meeting/DFD12/Event/177560

Surface Deformation and the 'Cheerios Effect': Small objects floating on the surface of a liquid tend to attract each other through capillary interactions, in a phenomenon dubbed the "Cheerios Effect." A series of experiments studied this phenomenon to gain new insights into self-assembly. http://meeting.aps.org/Meeting/DFD12/Event/177627

How the Venus Flytrap Actively Snaps: Although they lack muscles, plants have evolved a remarkable range of mechanisms to create rapid motion. The carnivorous Venus Flytrap, whose leaves snap together in a fraction of second to capture insects, has long been an object of study. Researchers provide new insights into their snapping mechanism. http://meeting.aps.org/Meeting/DFD12/Event/177924

Super-hydrophobic Coating for Aircraft Anti-Icing: Deicing an aircraft is necessary for safe flight operation. This can be done mechanically or with the use of deicing fluids, which need to be reapplied before every flight. A third option, applying a super-hydrophobic (water repellent) coating as anti-icing for an aircraft, is presented. http://meeting.aps.org/Meeting/DFD12/Event/177678

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 19

Measuring and Analyzing a Bird's Flight: To tackle the long-standing problem of precisely measuring shape and profiling of free-flying birds, researchers developed a technique to determine the shape of naturally textured surfaces. http://meeting.aps.org/Meeting/DFD12/Event/178264

The Soccer Knuckleball: A soccer ball kicked with a very low spin can exhibit a zigzag trajectory. These trajectories, called knuckleballs, are being studied to determine their cause. http://meeting.aps.org/Meeting/DFD12/Event/177995

Mosquito Flight Failure in Heavy Fog: Mosquitoes thrive during rainfall and high humidity, and can successfully fly through rainfall. But, just like modern aircraft, too much fog and a mosquito is grounded. http://meeting.aps.org/Meeting/DFD12/Event/178572

Suction Cups Aid in Tagging Marine Mammals: Securely and humanely tagging marine animals is important for research into their habits and habitats. New research indicates that suction cups can provide sufficient force to safely adhere tags to dolphins. http://meeting.aps.org/Meeting/DFD12/Event/178233

Penguin Huddle: To protect themselves from the elements, penguins huddle together, shifting their positions so the most exposed and least exposed eventually change location. A new model shows just how effective this strategy is at keeping penguins warm. http://meeting.aps.org/Meeting/DFD12/Event/178234

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 20

Mixing Water and Biofuels: Gasoline is now commonly combined with ethanol in an effort to reduce dependence on oil. But while alcohol blends easily with water, petroleum does not. New research explores how this combined liquid would behave during a spill. http://meeting.aps.org/Meeting/DFD12/Event/178765

Dust Settling in Protoplanetary Disks: New clues to planet formation: Planets start out as microscopic grains within protoplanetary disks of gas and dust in orbit around newly formed protostars. Researchers investigate what conditions trigger gravitational instability, causing dust and gas to clump together to form planetesimals, the building blocks of planets. http://meeting.aps.org/Meeting/DFD12/Event/179282

Using Simple Flows to Tie Knots in Flexible Fibers: Flexible fibers, such as DNA, have sometimes been found to contain knots. While such fibers are not -- strictly speaking -- closed knots, they exhibit similar characteristics. The formation of these "open knots" and the effects they have on material properties will be discussed. http://meeting.aps.org/Meeting/DFD12/Event/178859

Barnes & Noble says PIN pads in 63 stores hacked

50 min.

Barnes & Noble said Tuesday that devices used by customers to swipe credit and debit cards have been tampered with in 63 of its stores in nine states.

The company warned customers to check for unauthorized transactions and to change their personal identification numbers, or PINs. It didn't say how many accounts may have been compromised.

But The New York Times, citing a high-ranking company official it did not name, reported that hackers had made unauthorized purchases on some customer credit cards.

The New York-based bookseller said in a statement Tuesday only one of the devices, known as PIN pads, was tampered with in each of the 63 stores. The stores are in California, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island.

All the PIN pads in its nearly 700 stores nationwide were disconnected on Sept. 14 after the company learned of the tampering. Federal authorities are helping in its investigation.

Barnes & Noble said it is working with banks and card issuers to identify compromised accounts so that additional fraud-protection measures can be taken.

Customers at its book stores will now have to ask cashiers to swipe credit or debit cards on card readers connected to cash registers, a process that is secure, Barnes & Noble said.

Anything bought on Barnes & Noble.com or with the chain's Nook devices and app was not affected, the company said. It also said its customer database is secure.

Barnes & Noble is only the latest major retailer to be a victim of a serious data breach. In one of the largest, more than 45 million credit and debit cards were exposed to possible fraud because of hackers who broke into the computer system of TJX Cos., the parent company of retailers T.J. Maxx and Marshall's, starting in 2005.

Pocket brings its 'read it later' service to Mac App Store, keeps its free status

We know Pocket has had a strong presence on iOS, Android and other platforms for quite some time now, but today the service formerly known as Read it Later announced it is now making its way to a bigger Cupertino screen. Naturally, Pocket's new application isn't much different than its mobile versions, meaning it'll offer the same offline access, save-for-later features as it currently does on the mobile front but with a more "native Mac experience" -- of course, this includes the ability to sync across multiple devices, stream videos and share tidbits via those cherished social networks. What's more, Pocket won't be charging a dime for its novel and handy OS X app, though this shouldn't come as a surprise given the outfit's somewhat recently adopted no-cost model -- still, it's a gesture most people will certainly appreciate, and one you Mac folk can start enjoying now by downloading from to the desktop-based App Store.

Video: Candidates reverse roles in foreign policy debate

>>> and now to what happened last night, that third and final debate, where the tone shifted yet again, as we said, so did some of the positions. we have two reports beginning with our political director chuck todd . good evening.

>> reporter: good evening, brian . it was a contrast in debate strategy. not necessarily a contrast between the two candidates. the president and mitt romney seemed to reverse rolls from the very first debate. as president obama seemed like the candidate that needed to change the contour of this race. and mitt romney deciding the best strategy was to play it safe. in the third and final debate, the president wasted little time touting his foreign policy achievements.

>> we ended the war in iraq , refocused our attention on those who actually killed us on 911. as a consequence al qaeda 's core leadership has been december matesed.

>> reporter: mitt romney tried to poke holes in obama's position.

>> i see iran four years closer to a bomb. i see the middle east with a rising tide of violence, chaos, tumult. i see jihadists continuing to spread.

>> reporter: for most of the debate, the president tried to belittle his republican foe's lack of foreign policy experience.

>> i know you haven't had a chance to execute foreign policy , but every time you've offered an opinion, you've been wrong.

>> reporter: the president mocked mr. romney 's repeated attempts to agree with many policies.

>> i congratulate him on taking out osama bin ladin and going after the leadership in al qaeda .

>> i'm glad you agree we've been successful in going after al qaeda , but i have to tell you, your strategy previously has been one that's been all over the map.

>> reporter: both men did echo the other on an array of foreign policy declarations.

>> as long as i'm president of the united states , iran will not get a nuclear weapon .

>> a nuclear iran and nuclear capable iran is unacceptable to america.

>> i will stand with israel if they are attacked.

>> we will stand with israel . if israel is attacked, we have their back.

>> reporter: one of the few times mr. romney went hard at the president referred to this private remark caught on tape earlier this year between president obama and dmitri med medved medvedev.

>> i'm not going to wear rose colored glasses when it comes to russia or mr. putin. i'm not going to say to him, i'll give you more flexibility after the election.

>> the president got traction responding to this frequent attack line from mr. romney .

>> the president began an apology tour of going to various nations in the middle east and criticizing america. and by the way, you skipped israel our closest friend in the region. you went to the other nations.

>> when i went to israel as a candidate, i didn't take donors. i didn't attend fund-raisers.

>> reporter: perhaps the most memorable push back on the night this one.

>> our navy is smaller now than any time since 1917 . the navy said they needed 313 ships to carry out their mission we're now down to 285.

>> we also have fewer horses and bayonets, because the nature of our military has changed.

>> reporter: well, it is crunch time , brian , two weeks to go. here's the new battleground map. we have it down to seven states nevada, both campaigns seem to agree, leaning obama. so we're looking at that midwestern part of the country, ohio, iowa and wisconsin. and, of course, florida , florida , florida , brian , may be coming back from 2000 .

>> thanks, chuck.

New vitamin-based treatment that could reduce muscle degeneration in muscular dystrophy

New vitamin-based treatment that could reduce muscle degeneration in muscular dystrophy

Wednesday, October 24, 2012

Boosting the activity of a vitamin-sensitive cell adhesion pathway has the potential to counteract the muscle degeneration and reduced mobility caused by muscular dystrophies, according to a research team led by scientists at the University of Maine.

The discovery, published 23 October in the open access journal PLOS Biology, is particularly important for congenital muscular dystrophies, which are progressive, debilitating and often lethal diseases that currently remain without cure. The researchers found that they could improve muscle structure and function in a zebrafish version of muscular dystrophy by supplying a common cellular chemical (or its precursor, vitamin B3) to activate a cell adhesion pathway.

Muscle cells are in themselves relatively delicate, but derive important additional mechanical strength from adhesion protein complexes; these anchor the muscle cells to an external framework known as the basement membrane, thereby helping to buffer the cells against the extreme forces that they experience during muscle contractions. Mutations in the genes that encode these adhesion proteins can weaken these attachments, making muscle cells more susceptible to damage and death.

The resulting muscle degeneration can eventually lead to progressive muscle-wasting diseases, such as muscular dystrophies. A major component of the basement membrane, a protein called laminin, binds to multiple different receptors on the muscle cell surface and forms a dense, organized network.

The study was led by UMaine Associate Professor of Biological Sciences, Clarissa Henry, whose laboratory focuses on understanding how cell adhesion complexes contribute to muscle development. The researchers discovered that a pathway involving a common cellular chemical called nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) plays a role in the formation of organized basement membranes in muscle tissue, during development of the fish embryo. As disordered basement membranes are seen in many different types of muscular dystrophies, the researchers wondered whether activating this pathway might reduce the severity of some muscular dystrophies.

In the current study, the researchers show that NAD+ improves the organization of laminin in a zebrafish version of muscular dystrophy. Zebrafish lacking either of the two main receptors for laminin have a disorganized basement membrane, causing muscle degeneration and difficulties with movement. However adding extra NAD+, or even a vitamin packet containing vitamin B3 (niacin, a precursor to NAD+), significantly reduced these symptoms.

The research team found that the main protective effects of NAD+ come from enhancing the organization of the laminin structure in the basement membrane, which helps to increase the resilience of diseased muscle fibers.

Because the same cell adhesion complexes are found in humans, the research team is optimistic that these findings may one day positively impact patients with muscular dystrophies. "Although there is a long way to go, I'm hopeful that our data could eventually lead to new adjuvant therapies," says University of Maine Ph.D. student Michelle Goody, who led the research team with Prof. Henry.

Prof. Henry summarizes; "One of my favorite aspects of this study is that it is a poster child for how asking basic biological questions can lead to exciting discoveries that may have future therapeutic potential."

Utahns celebrate first Native American saint in Rome, Duchesne

FORT DUCHESNE, Uintah County?? Just hours after thousands of Catholics from around the world gathered at the Vatican to celebrate Sunday's canonization of seven new saints, a much smaller congregation came together at a tiny church in this reservation town to honor the faith's first Native American saint.

"I think it's an acknowledgement of where real greatness lies," said The Most Rev. John C. Wester, bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Salt Lake City.

"It's not in money or possessions or power, but it's in a humble, well-spent life being close to Jesus that still speaks volumes to people almost 400 years later," said Wester, who presided over Sunday's Mass at the Kateri Tekakwitha Center in Fort Duchesne.

Halfway around the world, Pope Benedict XVI canonized Kateri Tekakwitha and six others Sunday in a Mass held at St. Peter's Square that was attended by an estimated 80,000 pilgrims, including three members of the Ute Indian Tribe.

In his homily, the pope praised each of the seven saints as heroic and courageous examples for the entire church, calling Kateri an inspiration to indigenous faithful across North America.

"May her example help us to live where we are, loving Jesus without denying who we are," Benedict said. "Saint Kateri, protectress of Canada and the first Native American saint, we entrust you to the renewal of the faith in the first nations and in all of North America!"

"We've been following this for a long time," Clarice Chapoose told the Deseret News last week before departing for Italy.

"I makes us proud, proud that we are Native Americans," she said.

Chapoose, her daughter Susan, and her grandaughter Zennia were among a handful of Utahns of Native American descent to attend the canonization.

"I believe (Kateri) is going to put lots and lots of faith inside Indians because they're not outcasts to the human race, they're part of it," 13-year-old Zennia Chapoose said.

"Maybe young Native Americans who are Catholics will think, 'I am a Native American and I am Catholic. Nobody's going to up me down ever,'" she added.?"They can just ask Kateri to make them be more stronger."

Kateri, known as the Lily of the Mowhawks, was born in 1656 to a Christian Algonquin mother and a traditional Mowhawk chief. When she was 4 years old, a smallpox epidemic killed her parents and brother, and left her with impaired eyesight and a scarred body.

When she chose to be baptized into the Catholic Church in 1676, Kateri was ostracized by her tribe. She became a nun in 1679, but died one year later at the age of 24. Her last words were, "Jesus, I love you," and the smallpox scars on her face disappeared mintues after her death, according to witnesses.?

Kateri was declared venerable in 1943 by Pope Pius XII and beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1980. When the Vatican determined that Jake Finkbonner, a 12-year-old Washington state boy of Native American descent,?was cured of a flesh-eating bacteria through Kateri's intercession after his family and community invoked her in their prayers, it paved the way for her canonization.

Susan and Zennia Chapoose encountered Finkbonner at a recent Kateri Tekakwitha conference in New York. It was an experience that still moves Susan Chapoose to tears.

"It was neat to see him, knowing that he is a miracle," she said.

"His face was disfigured, but we believe that as soon as (Kateri) is canonized, his face will clear up," Clarice Chapoose added.

Bishop Wester pointed out that while Catholics do pray to saints, they do not worship them.

"There are some people who live such an extraordinarily holy life, an exemplary life," he said. "It's like the church is saying here's somebody worthy of following, here's an example you should try to follow.

"They are seen as people like us who are in heaven now," he added. "They intercede for us, they pray for us in heaven and we believe their prayers are very powerful."

To have Kateri working on their behalf is important for the church's Native American congregants, Bishop Wester said, because?"it gives them a saint that's particularly their own."

"To have one of your own be declared a saint, it makes you feel like, 'Hey, I could do this, too. I could become a saint,'" Bishop Wester said. "I think that's very special."

Using Mobile (Cell) Phones in India ? A Tourists Perspective | Asher ...

indian-simcards

5) GSM band

The GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) frequency band for India is the same as Europe and most parts of the world at GSM 900 and GSM 1800. The US and Americas GSM is different so your US cellphone won?t work in India. Also, it is best to get a local simcard and so you will require an unlocked phone that can take new simcards.

6) Phone and Simcard

You should be able to pick up both a phone and a simcard from the airport when you arrive. I highly recommend doing this because it may not be possible to get a simcard anywhere else. They usually require an address and a letter from a local organization stating why you need the simcard. The airports are more relaxed so definitely do it right when you arrive. You can get local phones for around 1000 rs and if you?ve brought your phone from Europe it should work without a problem.

7) Simcard has limited life

Usually a simcard will stop working after 3 months of inactivity. They claim this is to stop terrorism. It is a bit annoying if you plan to come back next year. One way around it is to lend it to your friends who may be going to India within the 3 months after you get back.

Charges of cronyism in Hungary farmland contracts

Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orban arrives for an EU summit in Brussels on Friday, Oct. 19, 2012. (AP) ? Gergely Bocsodi's family has been farming in this central Hungarian village for six generations but he fears there may not be a seventh, as the region is caught up in a once-in-20-years land grab.

Prime Minister Viktor Orban and his conservative Fidesz party are being accused of broken campaign promises, cronyism and shady deals in which friends, relatives and political supporters have snapped up valuable long-term agriculture leases on state lands, cutting out many small local farmers.

"There is huge anger and emotion," Bocsodi said. "It is not easing."

Ahead of the 2010 election, the right-wing Fidesz party had promised farmers and young families access to state lands, one of the vows that helped them win in a landslide.

In Kajaszo, however, there were no locals among the winners of the land lease tenders. Instead, all the available state land around the village went to two groups, including a company linked to the mayor of Felcsut, Orban's hometown.

Fidesz won a two-thirds majority in 2010, amid a recession and deep resentment over eight years of Socialist Party mismanagement. Orban has since reshaped the country with a new, strongly conservative constitution, allowing him to concentrate power and exert greater political control over a wide range of institutions, from the media to the central bank.

Yet discontent with the government is rapidly growing, as austerity measures announced with ever-increasing frequency and lowered growth projections have called into question his government's unusual economic policies.

Charges of cronyism have been leveled against virtually all Hungarian governments, but the land lease scandal seems to be snowballing.

Bocsodi and his parents grow sunflowers, corn, wheat, and other crops on 50 hectares (124 acres) they own in this small village on the edge of the M7 highway, which connects the capital of Budapest to Lake Balaton, Hungary's prime summer resort.

They had been hoping to lease another 70 hectares of state farmland in the area ? enough to allow 28-year-old Gergely to strike out on his own.

"Around here, not a single local farmer was able to secure any land," Bocsodi said as he took a break from tilling with his tractor, preparing to plant autumn wheat.

Since the leases are for 20 years and there is no more land available around Kajaszo, 38 kilometers (24 miles) southeast of Budapest, Bocsodi's future is uncertain.

"I don't understand why the contracts are so long," Bocsodi said. "I would like to stay here. My life is here."

About 20 people staged a symbolic occupation Wednesday of one of plots leased to outsiders. After a tractor turned over a strip of soil, the protesters planted wheat in the fresh grooves and set up signs saying "Territory taken over by the farmers of Kajaszo."

"The situation is similar everywhere," said Maria Tamasi, an advocate for small farmers who took part in the protest. "Other farmers can't obtain lands in their villages, either, and if they see that a few farmers have the courage to do this, they will, too."

One of the most vocal critics of the government's land-lease policy is Jozsef Angyan, a Fidesz parliamentary deputy who resigned as state secretary at the Agriculture Ministry this year. He has compiled detailed reports on the land-lease contracts in three counties, including Fejer county where both Kajaszo and Felcsut are located.

According to Angyan, 59 percent of the state land leased recently in Fejer county, including the biggest and most valuable plots, have gone to just two groups.

Angyan does not speak to the foreign press, perhaps weary of being branded a traitor, as some government critics have been.

"For the time being, I want to continue the struggle among my own," Angyan told The Associated Press when approached in parliament.

But last month at a farmers' meeting in Kajaszo, the 60-year-old agricultural engineer did not mince words.

"Don't be mad at me. I was conned, too," Angyan said. "It's a scandal that the locals did not get even an ounce of land."

His successor at the Agriculture Ministry, Gyula Budai, has rejected criticism of the tenders and promised that reviews beginning in 2013, a year after the first leases were awarded, would weed out any irregularities.

"I myself, as government commissioner, as well as the ministry, reviewed the Kajaszo land tenders and no legal problems surfaced," Budai said.

Opposition parties have repeatedly drawn attention to the issue.

"We would have liked to see transparency in these land-lease tenders and have the evaluation criteria be made public for everyone," said Rebeka Szabo, a lawmaker with Politics Can Be Different, a small opposition party.

According to the head of National Land Management Organization, which organized the tender process, the complaints are being made by sore losers.

"We've granted leases to 21,000 hectares (52,000 acres)," said Robert Sebestyen after a ceremony in the village of Gomba where local farmers did get some plots. "Some people who did not win are unsatisfied."

Despite his disappointment, Bocsodi still hopes that one of the Kajaszo leases, which may have not met all the requirements, will be voided.

"I trust that part of the land will be tendered again and we will get a new chance to compete," Bocsodi said. "This is where I would like to make a living."

Microsoft releases new digital music service for consoles

Microsoft Corp yesterday announced that Xbox Music, a digital music service to vie with Apple Inc?s iTunes and Amazon.com Inc?s Cloud Player, will be available for its Xbox game consoles, starting today.

The service will be expanded to Windows software-based computers and tablets, including the upcoming Surface tablet, from Oct. 26, when Microsoft launches Windows 8. It will be expanded to phones shortly after that.

ENTERTAINMENT

The world?s largest software maker has been trying for years to make the household living room an entertainment hub with its Xbox. More than 67 million units have been sold since 2005.

Around 18 months ago, the company realized that Xbox users were spending half to 60 percent of their time on entertainment services rather than video gaming, Xbox Music general manager Jerry Johnson said.

USER EXPERIENCE

The market-leading video game console already streams Netflix, ESPN and other channels and is bolstering its service with music and other video content.

?We also realize, as an entertainment company, that music is an important ingredient on its own and as a part of different user experiences,? Johnson said.

Xbox Music replaces Microsoft?s digital media brand Zune that struggled to compete with iTunes.

PREMIUM SERVICE

Microsoft will offer a free ad-supported music streaming service, and a premium US$9.99 subscription service for unlimited, ad-free streaming.

The service includes a download-to-own music store with more than 30 million songs in its global catalog, more than iTunes? library of more than 26 million songs. It also carries more than 70,000 music videos, available only on the Xbox console.

It has cloud-storage features similar to iTunes and Amazon Cloud Player and an artist-based radio function like music streaming services Pandora and Spotify.

Xbox Music will be available in 22 countries. Microsoft hopes to take the service to Apple iOS and Google Inc Android devices next year.

MMAFrenzy.com ? Dana White: Alistair Overeem Likely to Face Velasquez vs. Dos Santos Winner

Last night following UFC 153?s fight card UFC President Dana White spoke with Ariel Helwani regarding the future of suspended heavyweight Alistair Overeem. White told the MMAFighting reporter that Overeem will likely face the winner of UFC 155?s main event between Cain Velasquez and UFC heavyweight champion in the spring of 2013.

Helwani asked White about the possible matchup Saturday night, the UFC President responded:

?Yes, that?s what we?re thinking,? White said, ?We?ll see how this thing plays out and what happens. Nothing is done. Nothing is etched in stone, but that?s what I?d like to see happen.?

Overeem was denied a license by the Nevada State Athletic Commission after having a 14:1 T/E ratio prior to UFC 146. Overeem was denied a license following a hearing by the commission in regards to the test. Overeem cannot be licensed to fight until December 27, 2012 due to the denial but should not have an issue getting?licensed?when that date comes.
